Great Northern Way Campus (GNWC) is on 18.5 acres of land donated by Finning International in 2001 to the 4 academic partner institutions. It is located on the southern edge of the False Creek Flats, a 308 acre industrial area generally bounded by Main Street to the west, Clark Street to the east, Prior/Venables Streets to the north, and Great Northern Way to the south.
Information on the False Creek Flats can be found on the city website here.
You can also view a pictorial history of the False Creek Flats here.
Great Northern Way Campus held an extensive planning process in 2008 that generated a number of ideas on developing the site to realize GNWC’s vision.
This process included a Vision Symposium where the presidents of the four partner institutions shared their aspirations and expectations for the Campus, a series of academic, community and business Roundtables, and a Design Charrette. A Public Open House followed on June 21st, 2008. These events comprised Phase I of the planning process.
GNWC gratefully acknowledges the Province of British Columbia for its support of the Symposium, Roundtables and Design Charrette.
On March 19th, 2009, GNWC announced its new President and Board of Directors (see full story here). The new Board will be reviewing the work to date from Phase I as well as the rezoning work done by Finning in 1999. Once this review is complete GNWC will work with the City of Vancouver to continue the planning process and embark on Phase II.
GNWC would like to thank all those who participated to date and look forward to your continued involvement in the future. Please sign up for the GNWC newsletter to keep apprised of the latest developments.
